Ratings: Top 50 "Essential" Expansions – with Andrea Bertani (BGG)

Check "Top 50 "Essential" Expansions" and find the best price on all items from the top among sellers all over in the Netherlands & Belgium!

While no board game expansion is strictly essential, there are a few where the community—particularly on BoardGameGeek—believes an expansion truly elevates the game. After compiling a list of the Top 50 Most Owned Expansions, the original author took it a step further and identified expansions with the highest ownership percentage compared to the base game.

To refine the list, several criteria were applied. Expansions with fewer than 5,000 owners were excluded, ensuring that only widely known titles made the cut. Expansions included in Collector’s, Anniversary, or Big Box editions were also left out, as they often feature minor content like promo cards, which don't significantly impact gameplay. In cases where excluding these numbers affected the rankings, notes were provided.

For games with multiple expansions, the entries were consolidated to prevent the list from being dominated by expansions from just a few games. This approach allowed for a more diverse selection of games to be represented.

You can explore the games from this list and check their current prices across multiple sellers.

While the galactic conflict escalates and several new factions are trying to get a foothold on the galaxy, the adversaries suddenly need to find allies among themselves to face the rising threat. The systems previously thought to be empty are suddenly swarming with Ancients – whole worlds of them, with ship capabilities way beyond anything seen before.

They are not willing to negotiate.

Eclipse: Rise of the Ancients, the first full-size expansion for Eclipse, introduces several new additions to the base game, such as Rare Technologies, Developments, Alliances, Ancient Homeworlds and Warp Portals. There are also three new player boards with four new different alien species to choose from. New components allow up to nine players in one session.

Due to the modular design, you can use all of these additions or just some of them in any game of Eclipse, according to your preferences and play style.

The Ancients are rising. Will your civilization rise to the occasion and emerge victorious?

Description from the publisher:

"Our Rebellion is all that remains to push back the Empire. We think you may be able to help us."

–Mon Mothma

New leaders. New missions. New tactic cards that lead to more fully cinematic combats… Rise of the Empire is an expansion for Star Wars: Rebellion inspired largely by the movie Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. And just as the movie provided new insight into the Galactic Civil War presented in the original Star Wars trilogy, Rise of the Empire adds new depth and story to your Rebellion game experience.

You can send Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor to recover the Death Star plans. You can confuse Imperials with false orders and assaults behind enemy lines. You can command Director Krennic and his finest death troopers. And you can set traps for the Rebel pilots and soldiers, luring them away from their base and into massive battles with more fully cinematic combat and tactics. Even Jabba the Hutt makes an appearance, offering his services to the Empire and feeding his prisoners to the Sarlaac.

Altogether, Rise of the Empire introduces eight new leaders, thirty-six plastic miniatures, five target markers, two attachment rings, three new dice, and more than one-hundred new cards. You'll find U-wings, TIE Strikers, Nebulon-B frigates, and the Interdictor. You'll gain new ways of subverting your opponent's plans, and you'll discover a whole new chapter in your ongoing Galactic Civil War!

Embark on an epic journey to reach the sands of Mahdia, a pirate fortress on the shores of North Africa! Is your army strong enough to break through its walls? Or will the African heat, merciless pirate raiders, and the Ifrit, a creature of Arabic legend, see your dreams of glory sinking into the sea of sand forever?

The Destinies: Sea of Sand expansion comes with three scenarios that form a campaign that should be played in the suggested order. We recommend playing the whole campaign with the same group of players, but this is not mandatory. Scenarios are linked together, and each unveils the next steps of a bigger plot, but each scenario is a separate story, and knowing previous scenarios should not give a player any unfair advantage.

Sea of Sand also adds new dungeon and maze mechanisms, alongside the use of "sub-maps" to represent the vast distances of the Saharan desert and the locations players will visit.

The war of the gods did not begin with any formal declaration. No sides were drawn, no single event cascaded into open battle. Instead, it was the slow realization that as devotion to one god waxed, power to the others waned.

Some thought themselves above the fray, thought themselves wiser, learned, or immune to the whim of mortal man. They were wrong. The gods do not exist without followers, and devotion is their lifeblood, whether they wish it so or not. The tide of cosmic balance had shifted towards mankind, and the gods who once enjoyed their unquestioning deference now have to contend for prominence.

Thus it was that the last holdouts who sought to distance themselves from the fray took to the battlefield in their own bids for dominance. What had begun as jostling in a minor power struggle had drawn in all the mightiest deities across the Egyptian pantheon.

In the end, there could be only one.

The Pantheon expansion introduces a whole new set of five Egyptian gods, each bringing their own abilities and warriors to the fight against oblivion. The introduction of each new god into the game not only gives new options to the player who controls them, but also changes the landscape for everyone on the table. New strategies and dynamics arise as different mixes of gods are pitted against each other, and the Pantheon expansion increases these combinations exponentially!

The Pantheon expansion comes with:

5 God figures and 30 Warrior figures:

- 1 Horus God figure and 6 Horus Warrior figures

- 1 Hathor God figure and 6 Hathor Warrior figures

- 1 Set God figure and 6 Set Warrior figures

- 1 Thoth God figure and 6 Thoth Warrior figures

- 1 Bastet God figure and 6 Bastet Warrior figures

5 God dashboards

5 Joined God dashboards

30 Battle cards (6 for each God)

20 Color bases (4 for each God)

80 Ankh tokens (16 for each God)

Additionally, acquired in the Kickstarter campaign, you also get 5 Kickstarter Exclusive bonus plastic components: 3 sculpted Bastet Cat tokens and 2 engraved Eye of Horus tokens.

The External Works mechanic, a set of powerful tiles that can be obtained from a new action space. With them you'll be able to perform many actions, but be careful. To unlock the External Works power you'll need to burn the required amount of Concrete Mixers and Excavators rather than just assign them to the Construction Wheel.

The Personal Building mechanics. You’ll be able to use a combination of five Building tiles, each one with a different, powerful effect that can be activated by your engineers.

Two new Executive Officers designed to enhance the External Works and the Personal Buildings.

Three new Advanced Technology tiles dedicated to the construction of Personal Buildings.

This is the first expansion for Descent. It includes new monsters (with figures), heroes, treasures, effects, scenarios, props, and more! It also features options for the Overlord player to customize his deck for each scenario.

Deep in the bowels of the world, there lies a chasm that was sealed over a millennium ago. Within it lies a force of evil so great that, were it to be unleashed, it would plunge the world into a thousand years of darkness.

Before you can face that challenge, however, you'll battle your way through dank tunnels, trapped temples, and even volcanoes to prove your worth. You'll face a host of new tricks, traps, and other lethal obstacles over the course of your quest, including scything blades, rolling boulders, and boiling hot lava.

Descent: the Well of Darkness features six new heroes, tricky kobolds, bloodsucking ferrox, and unstoppable golems. Heroes will find more skill and treasures at their disposal, including six new relics and a new type of potion. The Overlord, on the other hand, gains the ability to customize his deck before every game, putting in devastating new trap, event, and spawn cards.

Game description from the publisher:

Blood Bowl: Team Manager - The Card Game is a bone-breaking, breathtaking standalone card game of violence and outright cheating for two to four players. Chaos, Dwarf, Wood Elf, Human, Orc, and Skaven teams compete against each other over the course of a brutal season. Customize your team by drafting Star Players, hiring staff, upgrading facilities, and cheating like mad. Lead your gang of misfits and miscreants to glory over your rivals all to become Spike! Magazine's Manager of the Year!

Once a manager has chosen one of the six teams, he has five weeks to groom them into the best in the league, culminating with the Blood Bowl tournament. He does this by competing at highlights, collecting payouts, upgrading his personnel, and drafting Star Players.

Managers begin the season with a starting team deck full of basic scrub players. These players are none too bright and have limited talents, but a clever manager can play to their strengths by carefully positioning them to excel on the pitch.

Is your team ready to compete against other teams in head-to-head highlights? Highlights are the randomly determined matchups over which players compete. The more highlights a team wins, the more it improves and the more fans it accumulates.

The season culminates with the Blood Bowl tournament. After the Blood Bowl, the season ends. Players then tally up their total fans and the manager with the most fans wins the game.

You will now travel a cold, desolate landscape of apocalyptic Avalon in search of answers and - perhaps - salvation.

This expansion to the base game adds an additional campaign with 15 new Chapters, representing an additional 30-40 hours of gameplay. The campaign includes 4 new travelers (Mabd, Dagan, Sloan, and Fyul), 280 new cards, 64 oversized location cards, and a 220-page Campaign Journal.

Age of Legends:

Go back 1,000 years, and be one of the first humans to set foot on Avalon. Discover the truth behind the legends. Join the Knights of the Round Table in their quests and trials. This time, you will join the first humans to set foot on Avalon, 600 years before the events of the first campaign, and see the Fore-dweller empire at the height of its power.

The first expansion for Twilight Imperium (Third Edition) features four new races that are unseen in previous editions, more balanced Strategy cards, more belligerent Objective cards, several new surprises for neutral planets, two more sets of plastic units, rules (with more than a dozen new optional variants), and enough additional systems for a fourth ring around Mecatol Rex. Now it's 3-8 players. If you played TI3 and had some ideas for potential improvements, they are probably incorporated in Shattered Empire.

The expansion is composed by five "modules". One or more modules can be added to the game in order to customize it to your liking (or to have a slightly different challenge each time).

They are:

two extra rows of buildings

seven "alternative rows" of buildings (each replacing one of the seven standard ones; each player gets two of these during setup and thus has a slightly different board than the others to manage)

more than twenty Characters (each one with a special ability; every player gets one of them and enjoys his/her special power for the whole game)

more than twenty Events (they are shuffled and one is revealed at the start of each year, producing a special effect for that year only, which may be helpful, neutral or detrimental, but it's always applied to all players)

an alternative (deterministic) way to handle wintry reinforcements (rather than the die, each player gets six tokens numbered 0, 1, 1, 2, 3 and 4 during setup; at the beginning of each Winter you use and discard a token to get that many extra soldiers from the King).

Scoundrels of Skullport adds new content for Lords of Waterdeep. It’s not one, but two, complete expansions: the sprawling dungeon of Undermountain and the criminal haven of Skullport.

Each thrilling location has unique characteristics and offers new play options, including new Lords, Buildings, Intrigue, and Quest cards.

Owners of Lords of Waterdeep can use one or both of these new subterranean locations to add depth to their game experience. There’s also a new faction, the Gray Hands, so now a sixth player can join in the fun!

The Undermountain Module

Undermountain is a vast and multileveled dungeon beneath Mount Waterdeep that once served the crazed wizard Halaster as a site for magical experiments. Now it is a labyrinthine maze with few refuges for weary adventurers.

The rumored wealth of Undermountain entices adventurers to brave the mysteries and monsters beneath the City of Splendors. The risks and the rewards are greater for undertaking Quests that require more Gold and Adventurers.

The Skullport Module

Skullport—also known as the Port of Shadow—is nestled in the heart of Undermountain, deep below the streets of Waterdeep. It is a haven for nefarious crimes, underhanded deals, and back-alley murders. Those who visit Skullport do so at their own peril, for around every corner are new ways to make people disappear.

The Skullport module includes a new resource: Corruption. Unlike Adventurers and Gold, having Corruption in your tavern penalizes you at the end of the game.

Each Corruption token in your Tavern at the end of the game is worth negative Victory Points. The exact negative value depends on how much Corruption has been collected throughout the game; the more corrupt you and your fellow Lords are, the more Corruption hurts your score.

Description from the publisher:

Kami Unbound is a new ruleset which makes the presence of the Kami even more potent and vital in Rising Sun! Normally, the influence of the Kami is restricted to the bonuses each of them grant during the Kami turn, granted to the Clan who has the most Shinto worshiping them. With Kami Unbound, the Kami will get their own figure, which starts the game in a specific Province.

While no Clan worships that Kami, the figure just stands there, watching over the mortals' actions. However, as soon as one of the Clans sends one of their Shinto to worship that Kami, they take its Kami power card (an all new component), placing it next to their Clan Screen to mark that they have the favor of that god. While you have the favor of a Kami, its figure basically counts as one of your figures. It can be moved when you Marshal and counts as 1 Force to your Clan when deciding Harvests and Battles. Also, being the powerful forces they are, Kami can never be Taken Hostage, targeted with Betrayal, or even killed!

More than that, the Kami card lists a special power the player can choose to activate. In order to use the Kami power, the player must Consume one of the Shinto they have worshiping that Kami. In an overwhelming demonstration of faith, the Shinto is removed from the Temple tile and returned to your reserve (though not technically killed). When this is done the power on the Kami card is activated, granting its controller its power!

Players may lose the favor of a Kami, however, either by Consuming one of their Shinto to activate the Kami power, or because another player recruited more Shinto than them to that Kami (or is tied for Shinto but has more Honor than them). If that happens, the Kami card, and control of the Kami, immediately passes to the new player who now gains all the benefits of having the favor of that Kami (including being able to activate the Kami's power!).

Players then tally up their total fans and the manager with the most fans wins the game.

more than twenty Events (they are shuffled and one is revealed at the start of each year, producing a special effect for that year only, which may be helpful, neutral or detrimental, but it's always applied to all players)

an alternative (deterministic) way to handle wintry reinforcements (rather than the die, each player gets six tokens numbered 0, 1, 1, 2, 3 and 4 during setup; at the beginning of each Winter you use and discard a token to get that many extra soldiers from the King).

A call to arms! An abomination of a beast is terrorizing villages throughout the kingdom, leaving behind a path of death and destruction. The lord has summoned all able-bodied adventurers to return to the capitol and organize a plan to rid the kingdom of this menace.

In Roll Player: Monsters & Minions, not only do players compete to construct the greatest fantasy characters, they must also gather information about the monstrous threat looming, and prepare for a final showdown against the beast. The more prepared the adventurers are for the battle, the better they'll do, but that information doesn't come for free. Listen for rumors to gather details for the fight ahead. Where is its lair? What obstacles will there be along the way? What will its next strike be?

Players earn Reputation Stars by constructing the perfect character, as well as driving back the evil of the monster and its minions. The player with the greatest Reputation wins the game and becomes the heir to the kingdom!
